Giving us an immediate hint about its unfolding excitement, this week starts with the waxing Moon in saucy Aries. Headstrong and audacious, the Mars-ruled sign needs to be where the action is. This brief lunar transit is the opening act for the week’s main event, Wednesday’s Saturn square to Uranus. When the planet of tradition is confronted by the planet of rebellion, the exhilaration that began the week is likely jump the shark into another dimension. This one is the first of the three squares that the two powerhouse planets will make during 2021. Those squares are in fact one of the year’s key signatures. Last January, when Saturn and Pluto joined forces, only global news junkies were raising the alarm about the spread of a virus from Wuhan. It took a couple of months for many to associate the pandemic with that now infamous conjunction. Similarly, the 17th might come and go “without incident”. Then again, unpredictable Uranus may make its presence, and the nature of these squares, inescapable. Financial markets, the banking system, real estate and commodities are the most likely venues for expression. But politics, technology and geology/space weather are good candidates, too. In any case, Saturn represents the rules and limits, and Uranus upheaval and chaos. Push is undeniably coming to shove, and even stern, stoic Saturn finds himself in Aquarius, the sign of revolution and freedom. Also on the 17th, the Sun will be in the very late degrees of the electrifying sign.
On Thursday the Sun will slip into flexible, peaceful Pisces, and perhaps turn this week’s volume down a few notches. Pisces is the mutable water sign ruled by Neptune, according to modern astrologers, and by Jupiter according to ancient astrology. Both planets bring an expansive element into the mix. In 2021, Mercury, Venus and Mars will change signs during the Sun’s transit of the twelfth sign, which will begin changing the timbre of the year. These four weeks offer an annual opportunity to swim in the realms of creativity, compassion and spirituality. The shift can feel like drifting off into dreams. That Pisces serenity may be upset by Friday’s Venus square to Mars. With these two, it’s personal. Seeing both sides, from Pisces empathetic and holistic perspective, may be the best elixir for reinstating the sign’s ease. On Saturday Mercury’s retrograde will end, further signaling that smoother times are inbound. The week concludes with the Moon moving into domestic Cancer on Sunday evening. This monthly homecoming instills a sense of abiding security. Finally, a watery overnight trine between the Cancer Moon and young Pisces Sun may be the ticket to some exceptional astral travel.
